In case you ever need reminding, Tigers (Panthera tigris) are incredible. Their ancestors lived approximately 42M years ago during the Pleistocene Era. But, they went by a different name — The Saber-toothed Tiger. These jungle cats remain just as fierce as they were back then.
Needless to say, a lot has changed for Tigers. They’ve adapted at nearly every turn in Earth’s history since the Pleistocene. They’ve adapted very well. In fact, research suggests if we continue to protect their habits, their population just may bounce back from the brink of extinction.
Like the prey they hunt — Tigers have vertical camouflage to help them blend into their environment. Additionally they have Eyespots. An incredible defense mechanism that aims to deceive any would-be attacker. The jungle can be a volatile place to live, but mimicry can give a tiger the upper-hand in combat. Often, that can mean the difference between life and death for these highly-evolved, endangered jungle cats.
